Dear Family,

I am so sorry for Michael's passing. I met Mike once - about two weeks ago, by the recommendation of Jim Godfrey, the Clayton Chamber President.

I can tell you that I have met very few people who had a true "in the moment" aspect of their eyes and Mike truly had it. He welcomed me warmly and was so encouraging and I am so very sorry he left so quickly.

Mikey (nubs) was my friend through high school, though we hadnt spoken in a long time. He really was the guy who everyone liked. Overcoming circumstances most of us couldnt understand, he was an inspiration simply by hanging out or shooting hoops or fill in the blank. Im wiping tears typing this remembering his beautiful family must carry on, but Mikeys spirit is with u to give u that little extra that made him extraordinary. May God hold you in the hollow of His hand and Nubbie, we're all proud of you and were gonna miss u. You truly are a "Trinity Legend" See you when I get there.

You were always the kinda guy that could make the best out of a bad situation. You just had that "IT' factor. Always a lot of laughs, and you hated to see anyone feeling down. I feel I'm a better person for having known you. For that I say thank you, brother. I hope to see you on the other side bro. You will be missed.

To the Smith family,

I honestly don't know what to say except I am still in shock from this loss. I don't think I ever saw Mike when he wasn't smiling! He was always so kind to me and my family. Cora, Cameron, and Caleb thought the world of him and as children, they too are sadden by his loss. Our entire community has lost a good man. I hope the days ahead get better because I truly believe that is what he would want us all to do...keep smiling! To the children, always know that your Daddy made a difference!! Take care.. Kelly

How do I say goodbye to what we had?
The good times that made us laugh
Outweigh the bad. And I'll take with me the memoriesTo be my sunshine after the rain
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.
-Boys II Men
I can't believe that I am having to say this, but goodbye for now. I can still remember you befriending me almost a decade ago. Since then we have grown very close. Through the ups and downs that I have been through, at times, you were the only one there for me. You have given and taught me so much, and for that I am eternally grateful. Michael was like a son to Norwood and I. We loved him in that way. His generosity is unsurpassed. His contributions to 'Serve the Need in Johnston County, Inc.' have been plentiful, frequent, and unequaled. Never has he hesitated for one minute when called upon to make a donation towards a Special Education scholarship, to sponsor a fundraiser, to provide emergency funds for a person's urgent need, or to cater or provide food for one of our events at no cost. His hand was always extended and his heart was always open. His legacy of love, kindness, and generosity will live on forever. Never we will let Michael's spirit be forgotten. When Michael came to live with Emily and me, early on, I can definitely say there was never a dull moment. But that could be said about practically everyone going through their latter teenage years. Mostly, I remember the funny moments and have recounted them many times telling stories. Michael went on to become an outstanding young man. He had a kindness in his heart and a real love of people. He was generous and he had a passion for his work. These attributes led him to a very successful career in Clayton and he was a real benefit to his community. I am proud to have had the privilege to know Michael and to have contributed what I could to his life. My heart and my prayers are with Emily, Kelly, and the rest of Michael's family

I got to know Michael through our association with Serve The Need in Johnston County. I did not know him very well but I do know that his heart for sharing with others what God blessed him with endeared him to many. Michael always had a smile on his face and a handshake for everyone. If any man or woman deserves to be in the presence of Jesus it is Michael Smith. While we will surely miss him we can be comforted by the fact that HE IS IN THE PRESENCE OF OUR LORD. I do not doubt that nor should you.

Michael is with his Master.

Matthew 25:21
21 His master replied, Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'

Saying prayers for Kelly and the family. Michael, as a fellow Rotarian, wanted to always serve the community, and he was remarkable in his ability to do so.
